Down Syndrome Advocacy by Duma

Down Syndrome Advocacy by Duma

I’m lending my voice on Down syndrome awareness this year and my name is Duma. I have a son with an extra chromosome (Down  syndrome).

I’m appealing to the Nigerian Government at all levels and other stakeholders ( in countries where this is not done) to embrace the pattern of education that adjusts/modifies the classroom practices meant for neurotypical children to accommodate/benefit the special needs children! That education that does not discriminate, but rather makes room for children with learning disabilities!

We want our children to be given the opportunity to thrive academically and socially so they can maximize their God-given potentials through AN INCLUSIVE EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM!

Please, pause and ponder! Learning support, speech therapy, ABA(Applied behavioral analysis) occupational therapy, etc should be free for these children! Yes, you can make it happen! Yes, We can!

I’m Biby Yinkere a proud mother and advocate for Special Needs. I appreciate you all for your kind responses to my posts over the past few weeks as part of the contributions of the Engraced Ones to Down syndrome awareness in Nigeria and beyond.

Madam Biby and her lovely daughter

I agree with all our children, my fellow mother Duma and our young friend Emmanuel said about all round inclusion and the far reaching potential individuals with DS have.

We have decided that the time for a positive change, for a swift repositioning from discrimination to acceptance is NOW.
Congratulations to the DS community on a successful month!!!

Down Syndrome Awareness: Ugochukwu Shares His Experience

Down Syndrome Awareness: Ugochukwu Shares His Experience

My name is Ugochukwu and I’m 11 years old. I love to dance, sing, make new friends, and share some laughter with them. I just love life and I look forward to a beautiful tomorrow!

Though I have gone through a lot in my quest to catch up with my mates in many ways, my life is beautiful. Down Syndrome can’t put me down because God created me in His own image. And God’s image is glorious!

Please note that this story is shared with the parental concept. We at the Engraced Ones deeply appreciate parents who are willing to create awareness and build acceptance at all costs!

Down Syndrome Awareness: Daniel Shares His Thought

As part of our efforts to create awareness about the condition Down syndrome or trisomy 21, Daniel’s mom has given approval for his thoughts to be shared.

My name is Daniel, my parents call me daddy. I am like a city set on a hill that cannot be hidden (Matt 5:14). I choose to be useful not to be used,   to make changes not excuses, I choose self-esteem, not pity. Down syndrome cannot stop me!!
