We the entire Engraced time are grateful to mark another children’s day with all children around Nigeria.
We want to use this opportunity to appreciate everyone who has supported the growth of the special needs children in our care.
We are grateful for you who have volunteered to be a tool for awareness creation.
Our prayer is that the Almighty God will continue to bless and keep you in Jesus name. Amen!
We also pray that these young children will continue to grow in the ways of the Lord and they shall achieve everything they dream of In Jesus name. Amen!
The school of grace is the Educational arm of the Engraced ones that Carters for the education of children and persons with special need.
We are so excited that this arm of the Engraced ones would be launching its vocational center to encourage persons living with disability to pursue their passion.
Please count down with us, the event is in 5 days!
She wrote on her personal Facebook profile. “I was privileged to speak at BOSSFM Asokoro today. I thank Mrs. Lola Aneke of CADET Academy for the recommendation and the host of the Show ‘Health Watch’ Mr. Richard Badon for having me.
From the age of 4, my mom start dragging me along to meetings and programs where we all wore colored teeshirts, danced prayed and the adults spoke to the press. I knew those meetings were about me because the cameras won’t just let me be. Anyways I enjoyed the attention everyone gave me because they treated me and the other kids in a cool manner.
So as a child, I’m supposed to play, watch cartoons, and stuff but here I am listening to advocacy talks, learning about my fundamental human rights and self-advocacy. Now I’m just 10 years old and I already found my passion; SELF ADVOCACY This means I’m confident, I know my needs, and know just how to get attention.
I’m aware there are many BIASES around me and that’s not fair! It’s important that I’m given a chance to be ME. I don’t like the fact that people who make decisions about my educational and health care needs do not know anything about me! I’m inspired by my role model Heidi who’s advocating for the stoppage of DS abortions.
As part of our Down syndrome awareness campaign in 2022, we harnessed the power of social media and helped Miracle, an awesome child express her thoughts about children with DS. Here’s what she said:
I’M IN THE PICTURE! Funny the privileges ‘neurotypicals’ (people without disability) take for granted. You expect to be loved and accepted in the home right? Life isn’t that easy for some of us, some parents don’t have the heart to love us.
Some may have but are forced to give in to extended family or peer pressure. Siblings may or may not be supportive of us too but where parents genuinely love and do not present the child as a burden, those in their cycle may also accept the child.
Do you know that until recently, babies with DS are institutionalized? Do you know some families pretend that we do not exist and never mention us to friends? It may also interest you to know that some beautiful family pictures you see on social media and on family walls are not complete!
I’m getting really upset now. Why would society permit such??? I’ve often heard my mom say that ‘the discrimination of a child with additional needs starts from the home’.The impact of having a child with additional needs may also be in the area of time.
These kids require more attention and the rest of the family may pay the price. Another major area in which it affects families is their finances. Parents need to be cautious they let the others know why they are spending so much on the healthcare and education of this person who may not even be making much progress in the eyes of his or her siblings.
In all, let’s together stop the discrimination against persons with disability. Now here’s a call for action! Pay an advocacy visit to the family whom you know is not treating a disabled person nicely (they may be acting out of ignorance).
Inform the social welfare department around you know.
